Strengthening Global Partnerships: IPA Vice President Engages UN and International Organisations in New York and Washington

IPA International Vice President and Chair of the International Relations Commission, Oliver Hoffmann, completed a strategic series of meetings in New York and Washington, focused on strengthening the IPA’s global partnerships and expanding its professional influence.

As part of the IPA’s long-standing Consultative Status with ECOSOC (since 2004), Oliver met with several United Nations bodies to reinforce cooperation in areas central to policing, security, training, and social impact.

United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)
Discussions centred on the IPA’s global expertise and training network, including IBZ Gimborn. The UNODC invited the IPA to contribute practical insights to future policy reviews and to explore potential support for joint initiatives.

UN Police Division
A productive meeting with UN Police leadership further strengthened cooperation, focusing on how the IPA’s worldwide membership can support international policing priorities.

UN Women
Engagements highlighted joint opportunities to advance gender equality in policing. Future collaboration will align with initiatives such as UNITE, HeForShe, and the IPA’s #SheIsIPA programme.

UNESCO
In a meeting with the Director of the UNESCO Liaison Office, the IPA confirmed its continued role—under its Consultative Status—with opportunities to contribute to UNESCO’s policy cycle in areas where policing expertise supports cultural protection and education-related mandates.

Organization of American States (OAS)
In Washington, discussions helped revitalise the IPA’s relationship under its Consultative Status with the OAS (held since 2009). This may lead to IPA participation in the OAS General Assembly in 2026, expanding engagement in the Americas.

International Vice President Oliver Hoffmann paid an official visit to the United Nations Office in Vienna (UNOV). Accompanied by IPA Liaison Officer Valentin Tunner, Mr. Hoffmann met with IPA members and UN representatives to discuss strengthening cooperation between the two organisations.
