IPA’s non-relations with the IPO

International Police Association and International Police Organisation are not the same association and are not connected

International Police Association has a 70 years long history and was founded on a basic principle of friendship between police officers worldwide. Throughout the years the IPA has achieved global recognition, and is recognised as an important NGO by various important international organisations. The IPA values and cares about such recognition, which is important for the IPA’s credibility. Hence, the IPA cannot be associated with organisations that in our opinion do not share our values.

Below you will find a few questions and answers that may help you understand the stance expressed above. Should you have a question, you can contact your national section, and we will be happy to answer your question.

Q: Is it foreseen that the IPA and the IPO will consider a MOU or any other kind of co-operation?

A: The IPA is aware of conduct by members of the IPO, which the IPA does not condone, but from which the IPO has not distanced itself. Under such circumstances the IPA does foresee any co-operation or MOU with the IPO.

Q: Can I be a member of both the IPA and the IPO?

A: IPA’s international rules and regulations do not hinder a membership of both organisations. National rules and regulations may hinder dual membership; this, however, is solely the responsibility of each national section.

Q: The insignia etc. of the IPA and the IPO are quite similar. Does this pose a problem?

A: The IPA has a 70 years long history. The insignia of the IPA are clearly the eldest. The IEB have considered if legal actions could be taken for infringement of intellectual property rights. Based on legal advice the IEB has chosen to abstain from such actions. The IEB, however, regret the similarities that may lead to confusion between the two associations.
